Miguel Cabrera (Mexican 1695-1768) The Coronation of the Virgin Oil on canvas Signed lower right 33.5 inches x 24 inches (85 x 61 cm), unframed Estimate $8,000-$12,000 Provenance: Bocage Plantation Estate Auction, December 8, 2007. Located on the Mississippi River Road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana. Bocage Plantation was built in 1802 by Emanuel Marius Pons Bringier who came to Louisiana from Provence, France, by way of Martinique in the late 18th century. He built Bocage in 1801 as a wedding present for his 14-year-old daughter, Francoise, and her husband, Cristoph Colomb, a French relative of Christopher Columbus. In more recent history, the home was bought by Dr. Anita Crozat and her husband, Dr. Edwin Kohlsdorf, in the 1940’s. At the time of purchase, the house was unoccupied, unfurnished and in extreme disrepair. Dr. Anita proceeded to restore the house to elegance, even traveling to France to select the finest period furniture. Ownership of Bocage eventually passed to Dr. Anita's niece, Marguerite Crozat Genre and her husband, Richard. Mr. and Mrs. Genre lived in Port Allen, LA and maintained Bocage as their country estate. Bocage has been owned by the family of the current owners for over sixty years. During this time it has been restored, preserved, lived in and enjoyed. However, with the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Genre, much of the contents from the Bocage Plantation were sold at auction in December 2007 and the plantation is now being offered for sale. It is believed that the contents sold at auction from the Bocage Plantation had been in the family collection for many decades.
