Attributed to GRANT WOOD (American 1891-1942) Dried Corn - circa 1925-30 Polychrome cast aluminum relief plaque Unsigned 12.5 inches x 11.25 inches Estimate $3,000-$5,000 In the mid 1920's Grant Wood was commissioned to design three "Corn Room" dining rooms for the Epply Hotel chain headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. For each of the three dining rooms Wood painted large murals and designed all the fixtures and decorative elements related to the theme of corn, such as the iron and copper ear-of-corn chandeliers for the dining room in the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids. It is probable that the offered lot was a model for an apparently unused corn element created by Wood for one of the corn rooms, perhaps a wall sconce light fixture. Wood was of course no stranger to sculpture having done some of his earliest work in that medium such as his characterized self portrait cast plaque, 1917, plaque of Marvin Cone and plaque of Charles Keeler, both 1920, as well as others. We are grateful to Professor James Dennis who by photograph has examined the offered lot and confirms the attribution in written correspondence dated May 18, 2008.
