The Order with cross, in blue guilloche enamel set with a gold figure of St. Andrew with the initials S[anctus] A[ndreas] P[atronomus] R[ussiae] at the terminals. The crowned double-headed eagle profusely encrusted with pastes, the reverse with simulated feathers (see illustration), indistinct makers initials and gold standard of 56, circa 1908-. The Badge with central enamelled double-headed eagle surrounded by the Russian motto 'For Faith and Loyalty' in pastes on a blue guilloche enamel ground within a circular border and sunburst set with pastes. Hallmarked Moscow, 84 standard, dated 1877 and with indistinct makers mark. The Badge 4 inches (10.2cm) high; the Star 3.5inches (9cm) in diameter. The Order of St. Andrew-the-First Called was founded by Peter the Great in 1696. Originally a military Order, it was the highest distinction in Russia, only bestowed upon men who distinguished themselves in military service for their country. Its motto was For faith and Loyalty. From the mid-18th century, with the upsurge of further Orders (St. Alexander Nevski, St. Catherine), it became essentially a Family order, with each member of the Imperial Family receiving it upon baptism. It was also the highest Order bestowed upon foreign monarchs and foreign and Russian dignitaries until the end of monarchy in Russia.
