A FABERGE SILVER AND PAINTED ENAMEL CASE, Moscow 1908-17. The polished silver case in the Pan Slavic style. The lid decorated with repousse design encircling a matte-finish enameled miniature painting of a young maiden with baby goat. Hallmarked Moscow 1908-17, 84 standard, workmasters initials of Wilhelm Reimer, and in Cyrillic FABERGE. Length 4.6 inches (11.7 cm). The miniature painting illustrated the folk tale "Little sister Alyonushka and Little Brother Ivanushka" in which Ivan turns into a goat after drinking the water his sister warned him not to drink. Exhibited: Great Faberge in the Hermitage. Literature: John Traina, The Faberge Case, N.Y. Harry Abrams publisher, 1998, page 157, illustrated. Estimate $2,000-$3,000 It has been brought to our attention that workmaster Wilhelm Reimer was known primarily as a maker of jewelry. It is believed that he worked primarily if not exclusively in St. Petersburg. The Faberge mark on this case is the type seen on works made in St. Petersburg, whereas the assay mark on this lot is from Moscow. Subsequently it is possible that this case may have been executed originally by a lesser known Moscow maker and other marks including the Faberge mark may have been added at a later date.
