Description
PALA STELE OF VISHNU. Finely carved black stone stele of the Hindu god Vishnu, standing on a stepped plinth, expressing his typical posture and iconography, his four arms holding the attributes of mace, discus, conch shell, and lotus. Vishnu wears a short pleated dhoti, meditation strand, floral garland, and thick foliate collar. The god is flanked on his right by the goddess Lakshmi with flywhisk and on his left by the goddess Saraswati holding her vina. Flying attendants at top bring garlands for the god. Northern India. 11th-12th century. 32 3/4 x 17 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches.
