1929 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup

Sign In to see what this sold for

40bhp, 200.5 cu. in. inline four-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front and rear axles with transverse leaf springs, and four-wheel mechanically operated drum brakes. Wheelbase: 103.5"

The venerable Ford Model T ended production in 1927 after a remarkable run of nearly 20 years. The introduction of its successor, the Model A, was perhaps the automotive turnaround of the century. By the close of 1926, with sales slipping and the Model T becoming further antiquated, some considered Henry Ford's genius to have passed its prime. Such judgment was ill founded, however, as Ford Motor Company looked to Henry's son, the forward-thinking Edsel, who pushed for a modernization of the Model T for the 1927 model year.

Utilizing an inline four-cylinder engine of L-head configuration, the new Model A was a much simpler and easier car to drive. Its overall looks had been improved, while the body appeared to be mounted higher, capped off with a smaller flat windshield, giving the Model A a stylized look that was commensurate with its competitors. Other great features employed on the Model A included four-wheel cable operated brakes, welded wire wheels, and Houdaille double acting shock absorbers. Of course, the possibility of buying a brand new car for merely $500 was tremendously attractive to thousands of Americans. Notably, the new Fords were also available in several color choices that included green, grey and black.

This particular Roadster Pickup is finished in grey with black fenders, a black convertible top and tan upholstery. It benefits from an older restoration and continues to present quite nicely with the interior in particular, devoid of any apparent defects or imperfections to the upholstery. Features of note include Firestone wide whitewall tires, a driver's side side-mounted spare tire with Ford-scripted vinyl tire cover, and an oak bed floor. It has a good, solid body and the car, powered by the proper Model A engine, runs and drives very nicely.

While perhaps not concours quality, this Model A exhibits a very drivable appearance, which after all, is what this Roadster Pickup is best suited for -- continued enjoyment, a fun ride on a warm summer evening, and the occasional appearance at local car shows, parades, cruise nights, or perhaps even advertising and promotional duty.
