160bhp, 356 cu. in. L-head eight-cylinder engine, three-speed column shift manual transmission, independent front suspension and live rear axle, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 138"
By 1940, Packard's model line had come to include the 110 (formerly the Packard Six), the 120, 160 and 180. The Packard Twelve had been discontinued as demand had fallen off considerably. It was replaced, however, with a 160-horsepower engine that proved to be very capable of filling the Twelve's big shoes. The new eight-cylinder motor was introduced as standard equipment on the 160 and 180 models, which rode a longer wheelbase and benefited from elegant, sometimes custom coachbuilt, designs.
This Super Eight 160 Convertible Victoria was acquired in 1990 by its current owner from a dealer in Dallas, Texas. A complete and professional mechanical restoration was conducted between 1994 and 1995 while the body was painted and the chrome replated.
Since completion of its restoration the Convertible Victoria has been very well maintained and remains in highly presentable overall condition. The interior is trimmed in attractive dark blue leather and is likewise in very good condition, although the seat leather, door panels and steering wheel show slight signs of aging. The mechanical top similarly shows signs of use on the inside, although it operates smoothly, fits well and the exterior fabric is excellent. Furthermore, this well-appointed Packard is equipped with dual covered side-mounted spares with mirrors as well as fog lights and turn signals. The three-speed transmission features overdrive, which was used by the owner for years but now requires re-wiring. Additionally, the owner installed electronic ignition, a 6-volt fan in front of the radiator, and an electric fuel pump for reliability, which bypasses the original fuel pump.
Under its current ownership, this Packard was enjoyed as a driver and occasional show car, continually benefitting from regular maintenance. Recent work included new front brakes, wheel cylinders, manifold gaskets and spark plug wires. The gas tank was professionally cleaned and coated and a new sending unit was installed. Classic Carburetor in Phoenix, Arizona rebuilt the correct Stromberg carburetor, setting it to factory specifications. Finally, in preparation for sale, the Packard received a professional inspection and engine tune-up.
While it admittedly shows some use, this Packard Super Eight 160 is certainly a highly presentable, strong driver with excellent mechanics, fully deserving of the continued use it has enjoyed under its current ownership.
