1938 Packard Twelve Convertible Sedan

Sign In to see what this sold for

Series 1508, 175 bhp, 473.3 cu. in. L-head V12 engine, three-speed manual transmission, independent coil spring front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel power-assisted hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 144.25"

Revived in 1932, Packard's V12 became the flagship of the line. Initially it was called "Twin Six", reprising the name of the earlier 1916-23 V12, but since the engines were quite different in design from 1933 onwards it was called simply "Packard Twelve". A myriad of body styles was offered, 12 standard production models and ten individual custom Dietrich designs. In subsequent years LeBaron supplied a number of custom types, as did Brunn in the final years of the Twelve.

All Packards received new, more streamlined bodies in 1935. The Twelve gained aluminum heads and a quarter inch of stroke. In 1937, coil spring independent and hydraulic brakes were extended from the less expensive series to the Twelve, which also received a vacuum-assisted clutch. The most expensive production model Packard was the Dietrich-designed Twelve Convertible Sedan, which sold for $4,650.

Delivered on May 20, 1937 by the Chicago Packard agency, this Series 1508 Convertible Sedan has been in storage for 53 years, since acquisition by the vendor's father. It is 95-97 percent complete, but will require complete restoration.

The car is generally solid and straight, but exhibits wrinkling on the front fenders. The top is complete with all bows and folding mechanism, but will require refurbishment and replacement of the fabric. The interior is original and complete, the upholstery suitable for patterns. The dashboard is in remarkably good condition and might survive with a good cleaning. The odometer reading of 66,440 is believed to be accurate.

The engine has been disassembled in the distant past, and at some point the pistons and connecting rods have been lost. It will require rebuilding and all mechanical systems will need recommissioning due to their long disuse.

Although 1937 was a good year for Packard, the 1,300 Twelves produced represented a small portion of the company total of 96,000 cars. This car represents an opportunity to acquire one of the rarest production models.
