350 bhp, 327 cu. in. V8 engine, single four-barrel carburetor, M-21 four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, independent rear suspension with a single transverse leaf spring, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 98"
When Larry Shinoda and his Corvette design team began work on the new-for-1963 Stingray, it is unlikely that they understood the impact that this design would have on the car world. Long considered a modern classic, the car's aggressive lines and sleek profile were perfectly suited to its role as GM's image leader. As well, a broad range of powertrain options and countless racing victories helped the Corvette earn the title "America's sports car". In addition, a long-awaited set of four-wheel disc brakes became available in 1965, and finally provided stopping power to match the car's acceleration and top speed potential.
While the thundering big-block engines garnered the most press, a number of Corvette owners selected the L79 350-horsepower, 327 cubic inch engine option in 1966 and 1967, creating a truly balanced high-performance car. The high-winding L79 engine included a host of high-performance components, including free-breathing cylinder heads with 2.02-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust valves, topped with an aluminum intake manifold and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. As well, while the engine featured a high 11:1 compression ratio, it also provided ease of maintenance with its hydraulic lifters design. Best of all, this optional engine, which was also available on the Chevelle and Chevy II, added a mere $105 to the Corvette's base price.
The 1966 Corvette Coupe offered here is a very fine, matching numbers example that features a correct Code 984 Sunfire Yellow exterior finish, and is complemented by "knock off" wheels and period-style gold stripe tires. The original L79, 327 cubic inch V8 engine is mated to an M-21 four-speed manual transmission, and performance options include a 3.70:1 Positraction rear end assembly, four-wheel power disc brakes, and the thundering side-mounted exhaust. The functional interior features black bucket seats and a telescopic steering column, along with power windows and tinted glass.
This matching numbers L79 Corvette will undoubtedly provide a thrilling driving experience, with handling and braking to match the L79 engine's considerable power output. In addition, this high-performance car can be driven as intended, with the best Corvette performance features, with ease of maintenance to boot.
