884. Irving Block concept painting of the Krell Machine from Forbidden Planet. (MGM, 1956) This beautiful and extremely rare pre-production painting of the Krell Machine interior was painted by Irving Block, co-writer and one of two uncredited production designers for the film Forbidden Planet. Accomplished in gouache and colored pencil on board. Measures 16 ½ in. x 21 ½ in. overall, the image being 6 in. x 15 in. It is signed, "Block" at the lower left. The painting is a near-match for a shot of the Krell Machine used in the actual film, including the small-scale depiction of some characters walking within the Machine.

On the reverse is a pencil sketch which appears to be an early rendering for achieving the proper vanishing points and perspective for another image of the Krell Machine interior. This, too, aligns with an actual image of the Machine from the film, one looking down the vertigo-inducing shaft. $6000 - $8000
