Title: Photographic negative of a "China Clipper" large flying boat under the San Francisco Bay Bridge during construction
Author: Sunderland, Clyde
Description: 5x7" with a print from the negative included. Dated on envelope 11/22/35.The large "China Clipper" flying boat cruises under the cables of the western span San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, before the roadway was hung. Clyde Sunderland (1900-1989) was a pioneering aerial photographer, operating out of his home base of Oakland, California beginning in the 1920's. He was commissioned by Franklin D. Roosevelt to write a textbook on aerial photography and train naval photographers in 1939 and he taught at Pensacola until the end of the war. This negative came out of his estate.
