Bible Portfolio, 1965, 10 woodcuts, 19.3x13.8" (49x35cm) each, edition 100, hand signed and numebred in pencil. Prints are in excellent condition. Each print has a white matt around. The prints are placed in a canvas portfolio that is in a good condition, portfolio has some stains, size: 24.4x18.1" (62x46cm). Jacob Steinhardt (1887-1968) was born in 1887 in Zerkow, Germany. He studied at the School of Art in Berlin in 1906, and a year later he studied painting with Louis Corinth and engraving with Herman Struck. He continued his studies in Paris in 1908-10 together with Matisse and Steinlen. In 1914 he exhibited with Meidner at the first Expressionist Exhibition in Berlin. Steinhardt immigrated to Israel in 1933 and became a teacher and director of the Bezalel School of Art. He is mostly known for his narrative woodcuts depicting biblical and other Jewish subjects. He won several international prizes for his woodcuts, and had many exhibition across the world. Steinhardt died in 1968. The Bible Portfolio includes 10 striking woodcuts that deal with familiar biblical themes - Noah Blessing the Beasts, Abraham sends away Hagar and her son Ishmael, the Meeting of Esau and Jacob, Rachel weeping for her Children, Bilaam and the Ass, Joseph in the Pit receives Food and Drink from Reuben, Moses on Mountain of Nebo, Ruth and Naomi, Jonah and the Fish and Jonah and the Castor Oil Plant. The portfolio is accompanied by a brief introduction in Hebrew and English.
