Title: The American Practical Navigator
Author: Nathaniel Bowditch Printing Year: c1802 Condition/Details: Including the original calfskin boards, this antique volume is a scarce early printing of this landmark nautical work. This printing is likely the 1802 or 1807 edition, the title page is lacking. This copy is incomplete and it includes five original plates (Projection of the Plane Scales, The Solar System, Geographical Terms Explained at One View & Geographical Circles and Zones, The Mariner's Compass & The Minute Glass, Surveying). The text block begins at page ix, there are pages missing from page 135 through 170 and there are approximately 200 pages lacking prior to page 539. The last present intact page is number 548 and there is period hand re-stitching to bind the contents, the front board is detached. Most of the original spine label remains, there may be other individual leaves lacking. The work is illustrated with the five copper engraving full pages and many inset tables, charts and diagrams. There is period writing on the back endpaper and a period hand-drawn ship on the front endpaper. The pages display scattered toning, foxing and occasional marks.
