Title: The Birthright - A Novel; New Sketches of Everyday Life: A Diary - Together with Strife and Peace; Arthur - A Novel; Marriage - A Novel
Authors: Catherine Gore, Fredrika Bremer, Eugene Sue, Susan Ferrier Publisher: Harper & Brothers Printing Year: 1843, 1844, 1844, 1847 Condition/Details: Bound in three-quarter leather over marble boards, this book consists of four antique novels bound together in one volume, commissioned as a private binding. As was often the custom in the 1800's this book includes a collection of favorite stories that were presented to a bindery, to be bound together as a custom literary collection. The first novel, Victorian author Gore's "The Birthright", is the first American edition complete. The second novel is from the series entitled Sketches of Everyday Life by Swedish author F. Bremer, who was a pioneer advocate for women's rights. This work includes a preface by the translator, Mary Howitt, a famous author herself, best known for her "The Spider and the Fly". The third text is also a first American edition French novelist's 1838 portrayal of contemporary "high life" . The last of these novels is Ferrier's critique of marriage and satirical view of the Scotland of the early nineteenth century. The volume has tearing to spine at bottom and back board now nearly detached. Binding is otherwise solid with clean pages. There is a period bookplate on the front endpaper bearing the name "Mrs. J. H. Cook." The book measures approximately 6" x 9.25" and contains 59/134/166/156 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
