Voltaire (Francois Marie Arouet de) Elémens de la Philosophie de Neuton, first edition, engraved idealised portrait frontispiece of Newton, 6 engraved plates, some folding, folding engraved table, numerous fine engraved vignettes by Folkema and engraved diagrams in text, title in red and black with engraved vignette, some foxing and soiling, lacking portrait of Voltaire, top portion of front free endpaper cut away, bookplate on front paste-down, contemporary calf, rubbed, extremities worn, [Babson/Newton 120; Norman 2165], 8vo, Amsterdam, chez Jacques Desbordes, 1738.***Like the Norman copy this is a variant issue with the Desbordes imprint and several text variations. "From 1725 to 1728, Voltaire lived in exile in England and became a fervent admirer of the Newtonian philosophy which he introduced into France. He may have met Newton...he attended his funeral and new his niece, Clara Barton Conduitt" (Babson/Newton). A poem and dedication to Voltaire's mistress, the Marquise du Ch*** [Chatelet} who studied Newton and translated the Principia into French, precedes the text..
