Mali, Bamana. Superb standing female figure with slender narrow incised body, arms carved free, the hands on the lower hips, tall incised median crest rising above heart-shaped face with bit crooked nose and little open mouth. The coiffure is falling with short plaits beside the ears with brass earrings, the breast projecting and the back is beautifully straight, each foot is on semi-circular base. Minor cracks, the crack in the coiffure is repaired with three metal braces, the top of the rear is broken off. Wood, fine glossy dark and encrusted patina. H. ca. 77 cm. Provenance: Acquired 1980 Stella Pitt-Rivers, London.
