Ward, L. & E.M. Washington

The Mistress.

Woodcut. c1998. Printed c1998. Erroneously annotated "E.M. Washington 1931" in pencil, lower margin. Wide margins. 4 3/8 x 3 9/16 in. (111 x 90 mm). Sheet Size: 8 3/8 x 6 5/8 in. (213 x 168 mm). By Earl Marshawn Washington after the work by Lynd Ward. Against all odds and in the face of the facts noted below, WashingtonÆs ôearlyö prints are rapidly becoming collectorÆs items. Sold as is, not subject to return. Washington was the perpetrator of an elaborate scheme that involved the intentional misrepresentation of woodcuts created by him after works by other artists. Washington claimed the prints were produced prior to 1952 by his great-grandfather, Earl Mack Washington, from original blocks by famous artists that he had either salvaged from a fire-bombed Manhattan print shop or received as gifts from the artists themselves. The story and subsequent revisions by Washington have proved false, and though there remains a degree of uncertainty regarding the precise origin of the E.M. Washington prints, the most probable explanation is that they were printed by Earl Marshawn Washington from blocks he created c1998.
