Dr. Seuss Political Cartoon PM Magazine 1940-1948

Title: Complete Collection of Editorial Cartoons from PM
Author: Seuss, Dr.
Description: 2171 issues bound into 96 volumes. 6/14/40 through 5/31/48, comprising nearly the entire run of PM (lacking only the last few issues of 6/1-6/22, 1948). (4to) 14x11, red cloth, title and dates in gilt on spines.Celebrated mainly as the ingenious creator of books for children, many of which have become classics in the genre, Theodor Seuss Geisel's work as a political cartoonist during the 1940's in America is less well known. But during World War II, Dr. Seuss penned some of the most striking and compelling editorial cartoons of the time. An outspoken advocate against the policy of "isolationism," Dr. Seuss published over 400 editorial cartoons in the New York daily newspaper PM between the years 1941-43, sometimes as many as five per week. Many of the cartoons portray images of an America torn by political bickering while the rest of the world, and America's future, become increasingly threatened by Nazi Germany. The cartoons also regularly take aim at fascism, racism, and workers' rights. Fantastic creatures, reminiscent of those in Dr. Seuss' books, appear throughout the cartoons. During its years of publication, PM was an important venue for many journalists and artists, publishing not only Dr. Seuss, but also work by such figures as Arthur Szyk, Arthur (Weegee) Fellig, and Ernest Hemingway. Edited by Ralph Ingersoll, and bankrolled by the eccentric Chicago millionaire Marshall Field III who later published the Chicago Sun, PM was progressive, left-wing, and controversial. PM openly advocated for military intervention against the Axis armies, presenting lively and controversial photographs, illustrations, and opinion pieces. Thanks to the funding from Field, PM did not need to rely on revenue from advertisements, thus providing its artists and journalists a creative and editorial freedom not found in other publications. Dr. Seuss began publishing his political cartoons in PM in 1941 and was a regular contributor for almost two years. All of the editorial cartoons that were published by Dr. Seuss in PM are represented in this collection; rarely seen as such..
