First Edition.One of the most famous of all the late-Victorian magazines. The vast bulk of Doyle's work was first published in Strand, including all of the Sherlock Holmes stories with the exception of "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) and "The Sign of Four" (1890). Founded by George Newnes in 1890, it was aimed at a mass market, being cheaper and more readable than the literary monthlies of the time, with effective use of illustrations and a clear, simple typeface. Volumes 2 through 6 contain the complete 24 stories of "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes."
