Title: La Fontaine's Tales: Imitated in English Verse [bound with] Contes et Nouvelles en Vers
Author: La Fontaine, [Jean de] Description: 4 volumes. 7¼x4¼, full tan morocco, gilt ruled borders with decorative flourishes at corners with on-laid red morocco oval lozenges, spines gilt lettered and decorated and with oval on-lays, raised bands, top edges gilt.English and French editions interleaved and bound together in the form of a parallel text and the whole extra-illustrated with the insertion of 3 suites of plates in addition to the 85 full page engravings of the Paris edition. The extra suites include a portrait and 20 full page engravings after Fragonard published by L. Conquet, 1881; portrait title page and 74 full page engravings after Desenne, Desrais, Chasselat, Duplessis-Bertaux, Dugourc, etc. published by A. Nepveu, 1820; and a suite of 78 proofs on vellum after Duplessis-Bertaux [c. 1876?]. The Paris edition of the text appears to be one of 100 copies on 'carré Chine'.
