RESIDENCE OF V. HUNTER, MECHANICSBURG, O. BY HENRY DOUSA (OHIO/INDIANA, D. 1885). Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, dated 1879, and titled below. A large and impressive view of the Hunter farmstead, with cows, figures, and a phaeton. Even toning, some marginal water stains, a few vertical acid burns. 30 1/4"h. 52"w., in its original molded frame, 36 1/4"h. 58"w.
Though somewhat naive, Henry Dousa's depiction of the prosperous farm of Vincent Hunter is, like all of Dousa's works, remarkably detailed. In this particular example, he follows the compositional format of his contemporary, Ferdinand Brader, who was far more prolific during his Ohio years. While Brader worked only in pencil (sometimes colored with watercolor), Dousa worked in a variety of mediums, such as watercolor in the present example, pastel (see Garth's, September 1-2, 2006, lot 742, and May 23-24, 2008, lots 24-25), and oil (see Sotheby's, New York, January 20, 2006, lot 269).
Vincent Hunter was clearly a prosperous farmer. He was born in Ohio to Virginia-born parents, though his appearance in the Federal Census is sparse. In 1880, the year after the execution of the present work, he is listed in Mechanicsburg with his wife, Sabina, and their twenty-five-year-old daughter Laura. His occupation is listed as "Grain Dealer" rather than the more typical "Farmer", seemingly indicative of his financial success. The large, Italianate, brick home was built in 1853. This important example of Dousa's work descended in the Hunter family, and hung on the wall inside the Hunter home until removed for this Labor Day 2008 auction.
