PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A WOMAN ATTRIBUTED TO ZEDEKIAH BELKNAP (NEW ENGLAND, 1781-1858).
Oil on mattress or bed ticking, unsigned. Depiction of a woman wearing a hair comb and grey stone jewelry. 28"h. 24"w. Framed in the original yellow-painted frame, 35 3/4"h. 31 3/4"w. Purchased at Skinner, Boston.

Zedekiah Belknap turned to portraiture following his graduation from Dartmouth College in 1807. He worked widely, executing portraits in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts and over a long career (about forty-one years), during which his style changed and evolved considerably. The vast majority of Belknap's portraits are on wood panel, however the present work is executed on blue-striped mattress ticking. For another work on ticking attributed to Belknap, see The Collection of Horton Foote, Northeast Auctions, August 6, 2005, lot 679.
