TURNED GREAT CHAIR.
Probably American and possibly 17th century, in ash. With three turned spindles, ball finials on the posts, and a double box stretcher. Retains an old, green paint. Imperfections. 17 1/2"h. seat, 44 3/4"h. overall. The thick baluster turnings on the arm posts and the back stiles seem to relate to chairs from New York and Connecticut. See Forman, American Seating Furniture 1630-1730 , catalog numbers 10, 15, and 16. Condition reportCondition: Paint has good wear. All four feet ended out (badly), some joints reinforced with nails, replaced rush seat but very clean, tight, and sturdy. Pommels are missing. Arms may be early replacements. One vertical spindle cracked at bottom insertion and repaired. Some cracking in wood throughout due to aging. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by our Conditions of Sale.
