SAMPLER.
Probably Rockbridge County, Virginia, 1847, silk on linen ground. Set of alphabets, rows divided with blue bands of stitching. Dated and initialed "H M S". "J B" in darker thread. Some imperfections. In old walnut and gilt frame, 12"h. 10"w.

Purchased from the family with history of descending in the Beeson/Snead families of Goshen and Bellsvalley, Virginia. J B might be Phebe J. Beeson ( born 1837), listed in the 1880 census as Jennie Beeson and still living with her parents, John and Phebe in Walkers Creek, Rockbridge County.

Condition: Loss to ground in upper corner, on side and one small hole. Lighter color is faded to tan.
