FOLKSY VIEW OF THE PERRY INN (AMERICAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY).
Oil on academy board, signed "Boyle" lower right and dated 1888. A charming depiction of a riverside inn. Some soiling. 18 1/2"h. 12 1/2"w., in an oak frame, 23 1/4"h. 17"w. In Rising Sun, Indiana, along the Ohio River and near where this painting was collected, is what is now known as the Empire House Hotel. Originally built in 1816 as a general store, later in the 19th century it was operated by Colonel S.S. Scott as the Perry Inn. Though the Perry Inn (now the Empire House) differs architecturally, it may have been the inspiration for the present painting.
