Sign In to see what this sold for

Two Eighteenth century copper plate engravings BY Mark Catesby (British, 1679-1749) on Laid paper with a water mark J. Whatman, each hand colored . Each engraving has the initials for a stylized MC. One titled Sciurus Volans, Guajacana. Plate T76. Paper is folded over along the edges for framing, measures 20" high by 13 3/4" wide. Second engraving is a framed and under glass is titled Scirus, Cornus. Plate T75. Visible art measures 19 1/2" high by 13 3/4" wide. Frame dimensions 21 1/2" high by 15 1/4" wide by 1 1/8" deep. Engravings are in good condition. See images. (UPDATED: 8/22/08 11:11 am to fix typo on J. Whatman.) (UPDATED: 8/23/08 2:30 PM - Our attribution has legitmately been called into question. We stand corrected and will deem them anonymous in the style of Mark Catesby. Please bid on what you are seeing in the images. These are terrific old, beautifully hand colored animal prints.) UPDATED:8/25/08 WITH RESPECT TO THE PERSON WHO HAD US REVIEW OUR LISTING, WE ARE ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEEING THAT THESE TWO ENGRAVINGS ARE MARK CATESBY. Upon further research, we have found the sylized monogram plate signature on the JJ Audubon Gallery webste. Our error was in translating the stlized mark from MC to JC.)
