after Gainsborough, Miniature Portrait on Ivory,
early 19th c., well-executed portrait of Lady Georgiana (Spencer), Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806), signed in lower right "Gainsbourough." The Duchess was a beauty known for her sense of style, politics, and gambling. Diana, Princess of Wales, is from the same family as this duchess; housed in ebonized frame with embossed gilt liner. The original painting by Thomas Gainsborough of Lady Spencer was lost for many years, but is now in the Chatsworth collection. SS: 3.25" x 2.5"; DOA:6" x 4.75"
