"Bro. William Atkinson" seated in a chair and holding a book, inscribed verso "Grandma Jane Whitehouse Bro William Atkinson", watercolor on paper, 7 x 5-1/4 in.; 19th century faux-finished and incised wood frame. By Gilmore family tradition, William Atkinson was a Mormon pioneer. Water damage, abraded surface, areas of stain, toning. Provenance: The Estate of the Late Reverend O. Leland Gilmore, Maryville, Tennessee William Atkinson, born in England, September 20, 1812, led the 1853 William Atkinson Party of Mormon pioneers. The William Atkinson Party departed May 18, 1853 from Kanesville, Iowa (now Council Bluffs) with 79 individuals and 12 wagons and arrived in Salt Lake Valley September 10 and 11, 1853. William Atkinson died at Salt Lake, Utah Territory on August 19, 1879.
