(Italian, 1854-1919), [Le Jeu Du Coussin] (The Game of Cushion), signed lower right "Arturo Ricci", oil on canvas, 24-1/2 x 33-7/8 in.; probably original early 20th century gilt wood and composition frame, frame plate with title; lot accompanied by copy of conservation report from Elizabeth Gould of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., dated April 14, 1981. Restretched on new stretcher, lined with wax and linen, very light retouch scattered in face of figure with cushion and in background, craquelure; frame with abrasions. Provenance: The Estate of the Late Dolores Ann Keating, Charleston, South Carolina Much like musical chairs, the cushion game was a popular game in which punishments were written on pieces of paper and put in a dish. Music was played as the cushion was passed around. When the music stopped, the person with the cushion was forced to draw and fulfill a "punishment". The game would continue until there was only one person left in the game.
