seated on lotus throne, a skull cup and wish-granting jewel in his left hand, a trident staff at his left shoulder, [remnants of blue and red pigment in hair and cap,] on a stepped cloth-draped throne with Buddhist lions, a separately cast foliate aureole with two [bodhisattvas,] a dragon's head and flaming pearl at the apex, 18th or 19th century, figure 7-1/2 in., throne 12-1/4 in. Loss to inlaid stones on figure, possible losses to plume on hat, throne lacking contents and base, both pieces with losses to gilding. Provenance: From the Collection of Douglas S. Mackiernan, Vice Consul for U.S. State Department in Tihwa, China in the 1940s.
