Title: Two typed letters, signed
Author: O'Sheel, Shaemas Description: Two typed letters, signed, to Art Young, proposing collaborations on books of poetry by O'Sheel with illustrations by Young. 2 pp. and 3pp.O'Sheel sought the collaboration with Young as a means to gain access to a publisher for "ballads for these times and for the people's cause - ironic, sardonic, blistering - by me; and incomparable pictures by you," access he perceived as being otherwise precluded as a consequence of his foreign policy differences with the Communists: "I am a very ardent Communist and a staunch supporter of the Soviet Union and its leaders, and I wish to play with the Communists here. But on the extremely vital point of foreign policy they are committed to a course which my political sagacity... tells me is wrong, absurd and dangerous. Until they see it - or until Moscow sees it and gives the word to change the 'party line' - they hold me at arms' length - won't even print, in New Masses, for instance, book reviews I've done for them: lest their pages be tainted by my name."
