Title: Three mimeograph Minutes of the Workers Party Political Committee
Author: [Workers Party]
Description: Minutes #46 for the meeting held July 26, 1928. 10 pp. * Minutes #55 for the meeting held September 26, 1928. 5 pp. * Minutes #58 for meeting held October 16, 1928. 7 pp. (incomplete). Mimeographed and stapled. At the July 26 meeting, the Committee directed the Agitprop Dept. to prepare a series of articles against the new Trotsksy book "to expose its fraudulent character and to popularize, in opposition to this book, the book of Stalin on Leninism;" established a subcommittee consisting of Aronberg, Trachtenberg and Stachel to plan for organization of "Friends of Soviet Russia" and received a report from Comrade Abern that the Executive Committee of International Red Aid had directed that Sacco-Vanzetti meetings be held under the auspices of International Labor Defense, not the Party. At the September 26 meeting, the Committee heard a report on the work of the Campaign Committee [Foster was the Party's presidential nominee] and approved a plan for popularizing the decisions and actions of the Sixth Congress of the Communist International (Comintern) exclusive of the "American Question" which had been addressed by resolution of the Congress and by supplemental resolution of the Comintern executive committee, copies of which are attached to the minutes. The October 16 meeting was devoted to discussion of the charge lodged by Foster, Aronberg and Bittelman against James P. Cannon, Martin Abern and Max Shachtman of "carrying on activities leading to the crystallization of a Trotskyist faction in our Party," a charge denied by Cannon, but which ultimately led to the expulsion of the three men on October 28. Original minutes of this important Party committee at this important time in its history are virtually unobtainable.
