Author: Cuthbert, S. Description: 1½ pp., on 4-page lettersheet, addressed on p.4. 9¾x8.Early letter from the mines during the California Gold Rush. Cuthbert has left San Francisco in a hurry, but has some regrets: "You were no dount rather surprised at my abrupt departure from San Francisco, but circumstances hurring me along so that I fairly surprised myself - one half an hour previous to my departure, when I learnt that a party of my friends where about starting for these diggins. Finding my expenses rather heavy and my finances growing low I thought I had better leave the city and I immediately sold my watch for that purpose, and the vessel leafing so very shortly after that I was unable to see you before my departure. Since my arrival here I have been hard at work - but I find the work, although the pay is sufficient, rather to hard for me; and with this view I wright to you to day that if you can give me a situation in your employ or hear of one at a reasonable compensation; you will render me a sincere favor by advising me of the fact..."
