First Edition.An important compilation of articles dealing with the exploration and settlement of Texas and the expansion of the West. The first volume contains contributions relating to the northward expansion of New Spain into the Southwest, including articles on the Sonora Frontier, American penetration into Spanish Louisiana, the conviction of Don Juan de Onate (New Mexico's first governor), and the role of Antonio de Bonilla in the Spanish plans for the defense of New Mexico in the 1770's. The second volume contains articles relating to America's westward expansion, including the annexation of Texas, the first printing of Albert Pike's manuscript journal relating to his trip on the Upper Missouri in 1805-06, activities of Josiah Gregg in California, and reports from a Texas agent in New Mexico. Ends with a bibliography of the writings of Herbert Eugene Bolton. Scholarly research from William Allen Brinkley, George P. Hammond, LeRoy R. Hafen, A.P. Nasitir and Charles Wilson Hackett. Ralph P. Bieber's copy with his signature on front free endpapers.
