Title: Autograph Letter signed by A.S. Mercer, to C.J. Heff of Kearney, Wyoming
Author: Mercer, Asa Shinn Description: 23 lines, on recto of a sheet of Northwestern Live Stock Journal letterhead, 11x8.Letter from the pioneer journalist and author Asa Shinn Mercer, best remembered today for his account of the Johnson County War, "Banditti of the Plains or the Cattleman's Invasion of Wyoming in 1892...", published in 1894. Mercer, who got his start transporting marriageable women to Oregon Territory during the 1860's before turning to journalism, moved to Cheyenne in 1883 and started the Northwestern Live Stock Journal. At first it was little more than a mouthpiece for the big cattle interests, but following the "invasion" of Johnson county by hired gunmen in the spring of 1892 he began siding with the smaller ranchers. The present letter concerns his involvement in Wyoming's presentation at the Chicago World's Fair.
