Author: ** Description: Engraved check (State Controller's Warrant), for $250, filled out in ink, signed by Controller Geo. Oulton. 5x10.The check, the purpose of which is listed as "subsidy," is made out to John A. Sutter or D.O. Mills & Co. Atty.; it is endorsed on the verso by D.O. Mills & Co. acting on Sutter's behalf, with notation "Relief of Genl. John A. Sutter." Sutter's vast holdings of land in California had had been wrested from his grasp in the wake of the California Gold Rush, and he received a modest stipend from the state government of $250 a month as he sought to regain his empire.
