The display of Colorado Ore was awarded a Gold Medal where the display of raw materials from the nations of the world formed the central zone of the elliptically shaped building designed to make the exhibition truly an exposition universelle. Whitney's enthusiasm was unbounded by reason; he writes "We find a belt of pyritous gold veins in Colorado surpassing in richness any known in the world, to which the gold fields of California bear no comparison."
