Atlas from Cook's Second Voyage 1777

Sign In to see what this sold for

Title: A Voyage Towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. Written by James Cook, Commander of the Resolution
Author: Cook, James
Description: Atlas volume only. [4] pp. 64 copper-engraved plates, including maps, charts, views, portraits, etc. (Folio) 18¾x11¼, period ¾ tan morocco with raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, all edges yellow. First Edition.

Plates and maps only, in atlas format (they are usually bound into the two volumes) for the official account of Cook's second voyage, detailing his search for the great Antarctic continent, written by himself, although he left on his third voyage before the book was printed so that he was never able to see the finished product. Superbly illustrated with, in Cook's words, "about sixty copper plates, which, I am of opinion, will exceed every thing that has been done in a work of this kind." Holmes 24.
