Author: Webber, John (after) Description: Original ink and watercolor illustration after John Webber. 10¾x9½, image is 9x7½.One of the earliest student drawings from Cook's Third Voyage. Dated Aug. 1784, the same month and year as the publication of the account of Cook's third (and final) voyage. An arresting portrait of a young woman with pierced nose and lips - "I saw not a woman with a head dress of any kind, they all had long black hair a part of which was tied up in a bunch over the forehead...though the lips of all were not slit, yet all were bored, especially the women and even the young girls..."
