Title: Natives of Oonalashka, and Their Habitations
Author: Webber, John (after) Description: Original ink and watercolor illustration after John Webber. 10¾x15¾, image is 8¾x14½.One of the earliest student drawings from Cook's Third Voyage. Dated Aug. 1784, the same month and year as the publication of the account of Cook's third (and final) voyage. This landscape shows Aleutian women sitting atop an earthen house - "Their method of building is as follows: They dig in the ground, an oblong square pit...Over this excavation they form the roof of wood which the sea throws ashore. This roof is covered first with grass, and then with earth; so that the appearance is like a dunghill..."
