Title: Autograph Letter from Jack London to "Armes"
Author: London, Jack Description: Single page, 10 lines on recto only. 11x8½.An intriguing letter, possibly to Charmian with her name disguised. Dated Glen Ellen (where the Londons rented a summer cottage), July 15/03; the day after Jack announced to his first wife, Bessie, that he was leaving her (see Kingman, Jack London: A Definitive Chronology, p. 45). "My dear Armes: - I'll blackjack a keeper and escape from the Home next Saturday and be with you at one 'o clock. Cordially yours, Jack London." Jack and Charmian's affair was a closely guarded secret and kept so for many months to follow. In fact, Bessie turned to Charmian for comfort in her distress, believing that her rival was Anna Strunsky. Though impossible to say definitively, the date points to a likelihood that Jack was acknowledging a pre-arranged rendezvous with his new inamorata, Charmian.
