Title: Typed Letter, Signed by John A. Browne to Jack London
Author: London, Jack - John A. Browne Description: Single sheet bond paper stationary with letterhead of Vallejo Yachting and Rowing Club, 35 lines, typed, on recto only. Autograph postscript in ink along left margin from "Mrs B(rowne)." 11x8½. With stationary envelope.With Judge Browne's salutation "My Dear 'Shipmate' and Mrs. 'Jack.'" the letter dated March 19th, 1912 bears the typed address on envelope of "Jack London / Sailing Ship 'Dirigo'/ PUNTA ARENAS / Straits of Magellan / CHILE." With additional typed and handwritten instructions on front of envelope: "P.M. - Hold to be called for. He will likely come through the Straits and stop at 'Punta' for his mail: if the ship goes around the Horn." The letter was returned to Vallejo undelivered with a London, England postmark and stamped "Dead Letter Office London." A chatty, friendly letter attesting to the close friendship between the Brownes and the Londons. Jack and Charmian were on their sailing trip from Baltimore to Seattle around the Horn, begun on March 2, 1912 and concluding in Seattle 148 days later on July 25. Jack finished writing "The Valley of the Moon" during the cruise and began "John Barleycorn." Heading: Place Published: Vallejo, Cal.
