Title: Typed, Signed Letter from Jack London to the Editor of the Boston Transcript.
Author: London, Jack Description: Single page on recto only; bond paper carbon typescript; 27 lines. 11x8½. With London's Glen Ellen stationary envelope. Signed in ink at conclusion of letter by Jack London.Fighting for control of copyrights on his vast literary output, the letter to the Editor of the Boston Transcript was among many such letters that London had sent in 1913 to publishers large and small who had published his work. On the day the present letter was written, it is noted in "Jack London: A Definitive Chronology" that the mail brought London nearly 80 letters "with returned copyrights." The letter begins: "Dear sir: - At the present time I am undergoing a pirate raid on the part of men who have not given one bit of their brain to create what I have written, one cent of their money to help me write what I have written, nor one moment of their time to aid me to write what I have written. This is a straight, brazen, shameless pirate raid that is being made upon me. My back is up against the wall, and I am fighting hard, and I am calling upon you to help me out." Continuing with specific instructions. Several hand corrections to the text.
