Tennessee Federal sugar chest

Tennessee cherry sugar chest, attributed to Middle TN (acquired in Nashville). Dovetailed box on stand, lower dovetailed drawer with dividers and scratch beading on door front, resting on tapered feet. The dovetail profile and other cabinetmaking characteristics of this sugar chest suggest a rural cabinetmaker interpretation of a Federal Hepplewhite sugar chest form. Condition - top molding is a 20th century replacement, medial molding is probably a 19th century replacement. Hinges have been moved on the sugar chest top and a strip has been replaced on the top where the hinges attach, a couple of areas of old insect damage. Sugar chest may have had a liner in the past. Dimensions 36" high by 21 5/8" wide by 18" deep. Circa 1825.
