Southwest Virginia stoneware jar, signed in script across jar, " James Vestal ". Later painting of bird on the jar. 9 1/4" height. Excellent condition. 19th century. Note - This jar was exhibited at the Great Road Style exhibit, William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon, VA and is illustrated in the Legacy in Clay: Pottery of Washington County, Virginia catalog. James (b. 1858) was the son of potter, Jessee Vestal. At the time of the 2005 exhibit, this jar was one of only two known pieces signed by James Vestal.
