Folk art eagle carving in the style of John Bellamy, nautical carver from Kittery, Maine. The stylized feathers, painting, beak, and banner of the eagle are typical characteristics of Bellamy eagles. The hollowed out back with attached plaque indicates a later casting of an actual Bellamy eagle. There is a possibility the banner may be an original Bellamy banner missing the staff. Condition – minor breakage and flaking to the back edges of the casting. Staff of banner is missing, banner is screwed to the wingtips of casting. 22" width x 6 ¼" height. Early 20th century. Provenance - consignor's father was friends with Harry Shaw Newman of the Old Print Shop, New York City and was a gift from Newman. There are print lots in this auction with Newman's Old Print Shop label on the back of the frame.
