Two colored stippled engravings. 1st item - Colored stippled engraving, " Contemplating the Picture", J. R. Smith delin (John Raphael Smith) Laneau Sculp, in lower margin "A Parischez Mme Breton, M.de d'Estampes, Rue des Noyers, pres celle St. Jacques. No. 30. au2.me". Lower right margin, " No. 92". Overall very good condition with underfold of upper right margin edge.11 3/4" x 17 1/8" sheet. Matted and hinge mounted. Late 18th Century. Item 2 - Colored stippled engraving, " L' Indolence ", Painted G. Morland Engraved by Victoire de Veau, lower margin "A Paris, chez Basset, M.d d'Estampes, rue Jacques, au coin de celle des Mathurins, No. 670". Very good condition. 11 1/4" x 15 1/4". Matted and hinge mounted. Late 18th century. Note - Margaret Lindsley Warden notes in her typed inventory this engraving was purchased by Dr. John Berrien Lindsley of Nashville during a European tour of the 1850s. These engravings were shown at an art exhibition in June 1945 at 1806 E. Belmont Circle. Several of Margaret's engravings were later exhibited at the Parthenon Gallery in 1954, but it is unknown if this engraving was part of this exhibit. Additional note - Ms. Warden has this John Raphael Smith and another Smith engraving with a value of $250 for the pair in old type written notes. Additional note - Ms. Warden has this Geo.
