UNMARKED WADE & BURNHAM'S VIENNA BURNER ON A GLASS, BRASS AND MARBLE STAND LAMP, kerosene period, colorless pressed glass Cable with Ring font with a 1.020 inch threaded brass fine line collar, reeded brass stem and double marble base. The burner is unmarked but contains all the characteristics of a Wade & Burnham's Vienna burner. Mr. Leflet feels this burner was redesigned by S. Cheney of Cleveland, Ohio and manufactured by Wade & Burnham in order to provide a platform for a new invention. In this case the subject of the new invention was to improve the draft at the bottom of the flame. The Cheney air director was not significantly different from the R. S. Merrill air director mentioned elsewhere in this catalog. The flat deck of this burner is very much characteristic of the Cheney patented burners and the thread size of 1.020 inch is a size attributed thus far specifically to Cheney. This example is fitted with a rare early Vienna chimney, 1857-1865.10 3/4" h, 3 3/4" sq base.
Ex coll: Herbert A. Leflet, Jr Note:Mr. Leflet has noted that the top of the ratchet cap is flat and the chimney band is clinched to a skirt on the deflector at three points. Some early Knapp burners were clinched in this same manner. He further notes the three raised grooves on the chimney band, none of which is used to receive the edge of the deflector. The design elements of this burner might suggest the influence of S. Cheney of Cleveland, Ohio who may have collaborated with Wade & Burnham. Condition reportUndamaged, marble base with normal roughness, chimney with minor losses to base
