BRITISH VIENNA BURNER ON A GLASS AND BRASS STAND LAMP, kerosene period, fiery opalescent font with green, pink and yellow floral enameling, opaque white glass base, molded font with a threadless European collar for a stopple type burner. The deflector/chimney band is secured by friction fit to the ratchet cap. This lamp includes a rare early chimney and cut and frosted 2 1/2" shade, 1856-1860.7 1/2" h, 3 1/4" sq base.
Ex coll: Herbert A. Leflet, Jr Note:Mr. Leflet writes "The Vienna burner was introduced in England in 1856, one year earlier than when it was introduced in the United States". He further states this burner's design is characteristic of other European Vienna burners. American, French and English Vienna burners share the same base dimension and use the same size shade fitter, making these parts interchangeable. With regard to the burner patentee, James Young of Bathgate, Scotland held the patent for refining Coal Oil, in England, dating from 1850 and in the United States dating from 1852. Lastly, Mr. Leflet inquired of several lamp collectors in England if they had ever seen or knew of any information about this burner, they had not. Condition reportBrass splits to base of deflector/chimney band, stem with a nick and foot with a chip to the underside, chimney with flakes/roughness to top and bottom
