Dan, Liberia. Noh Society, Bassa with full masquerade. Wood, iron nails, kaolin (white chalk used as pigment around the eyes), cloth, yarn, woven raffia, cowrie shells (used as symbols of wealth and prestige), string, mirrors, etc. It is extremely difficult to obtain a traditional African mask complete with its masquerade because it is believed that since these accessories absorb the perspiration of the dancer, part of his "living" essence remains in the costume and it could be used by opponents to "bewitch" him or bring about bad luck or disgrace to his affiliated secret society. From the Collection of Charles D. Miller, III. With original purchase receipt dated August 1, 1990.
